New Updates - Holo Everywhere and the resurrection of Andguard

Today we released updates that enable the Holo Theme (on Android 3.0+ devices) for AndGuard, AndGuard Pro, Masqed Crusader (Full and Trial) and Optimus.

Aside from this cosmetic change, AndGuard and AndGuard Pro (w/ iptables) have been revamped... Here is the changelog:

AndGuard and AndGuard Pro Now Utilize the RootTools Framework

AndGuard and AndGuard Pro have both been partially re-written to utilize the RootTools framework (developed by Stericson and found here: http://code.google.com/p/roottools/)

This change should dramatically increase compatibility across a wide array of devices and custom ROMs (including those running Gingerbread) and increase the accuracy of root/busybox detection.

Updates are available now in the Android Market.

Issues with AndGuard on Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3)

It has come to our attention that upgrading to Gingerbread (2.3.3) has broken AndGuard for some users.

We believe this to be a result of  Busybox either not being installed or installed in a non-standard location on some stock Gingerbread ROMs.

To fix, simply install and run Busybox by Stericson off the Android Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=stericson.busybox), this free app will ensure that you have the latest version of busybox properly installed on your system.

Andguard and AndguardPro Hosts file Blocklists UPDATED!

These new Blocklists should dramatically improve Ad-Blocking performance.

Head over to the market and grab your update now... remember to re-apply your desired level of protection if you are upgrading.

Of course, no ad-blocking method is 100% effective, so try not to expect the impossible :)

Known Roms/Devices that Work/Don't with AndGuard

To test if AndGuard will work on your phone:

In Terminal Emulator:
Type "su" and hit enter.
Type "busybox mount -o rw,remount /system" and hit enter.
If no errors are displayed, AndGuard SHOULD work on your device...

Known Not Working 
-MT3G Slide (Any ROM) AndGuard causes the device to reboot when it tries to remount /system as read-only.

Known Issues
-Sony Xperia X10 *Works* but may prevent Timescape UI from updating at Level 3 Protection

AndGuard Pro (w/ Iptables) is Now Available on the Market!

AndGuard Pro is essentially the same as regular AndGuard, but with additional support for IP address blocking via Iptables.

To Check if your Android device has Iptables, do the following:

At the Terminal Emulator, type "su" and then "iptables -L"

If Iptables is installed, this command will display the current rules.... If it is not, you will get an error and AndGuard Pro's Iptables functionality will not work.

AndGuard: Troubleshooting Tips

If AndGuard said that you did not have SU permissions and you believe this to be incorrect:

1) Enter Terminal Emulator and type "su" (This will check to see if you have SU Permissions, If it fails then your device is most likely NOT rooted) If that works...

2) Still in Terminal Emulator (with SU permissions, indicated by the # instead of the $) type "busybox mount -o rw,remount /system" (This will use busybox to remount your /system as Readable/Writeable... if this does not work, than you don't have access to write to the necessary filesystem or you don't have busybox and AndGuard will not work) If that works (indicated by an error message NOT being given) then...

3) Type "df" and look for /system in the output.... Does /system have 0K available? (This would indicate that /system is full, and therefore, the hosts blocklist cannot be written to it) If /system is NOT full...please let me know what model phone you have and what Rom you are running so that furthur investigation can be made.

Please email me back with any errors... and don't forget to include your Device Model and Rom!

If steps 1-3 work without error, then it is highly likely that the newest version of AndGuard (1.3.5 or later) has fixed your issue.

I will be compiling a list of Phones and Roms that AndGuard does and currently does not work on.... I will place this list on my blog in the upcoming days to avoid furthur unncessary dissatisfaction.

AndGuard should now work on ALL rooted phones that have busybox installed!

What Does AndGuard Do?

AndGuard uses carefully crafted, regularly updated blocklists to prevent your phone from connecting to potentially dangerous hosts.

* AndGuard is more than just an effective ad-blocker... it provides an extra layer of security to your mobile platform, helping prevent the loading of spyware, malware, data tracking etc...

* With AndGuard you can easily switch between various levels of protection.

* In addition, by blocking these hosts, AndGuard often speeds up the loading of webpages.

***It is Important to Remember that No Host-Blocking Solution can block 100% of the Ads and Malicious Content Found on the Web... Please Use Common Sense and Browse Cautiously***


Which Level of Protection Should I Use?

The answer to this question depends heavily on your internet usage and needs.

* Level 1 is the smallest blocklist and focuses entirely on ad blocking.

* Level 2 contains the ad blocking list plus additional blocking of known dangerous hosts, this level of protection focuses on the blocking of ads, spyware, malware and some data tracking. This level is recommended for most users.

* Level 3 is the largest blocklist and therefore provides the most complete level of protection... however this list may prevent certain commonly used websites from loading properly. This level is recommended for more paranoid users.

***It is Highly Recommended that you REBOOT your device after making any changes to AndGuard***
